A birth doula provides continuous labour support in accordance with a birthing person's wishes. Service normally includes prenatal visits, on-call availability for weeks 37-42 of pregnancy, labour attendance, a postpartum visit and phone/text/email support for the duration of the contract. The safety net of a back-up doula (in case the primary doula has an emergent conflict) is included in the contract.
A doula's role is to provide information, facilitate communication and give physical and emotional comfort.. If a partner, friend or family member is attending the birth, a doula empowers them to be as involved in the birth as desired. A doula does not perform any clinical tasks and never makes a decision on behalf of those she is serving.
Doulas work in co-operation with both doctors and midwives, and we attend births at home, in hospital, and in birthing centres.
